Frisco is my favorite spot to ride in the Outer Banks. The typical wind direction is SW and it’s best with more west in it for a side-shore angle. Downwinders are the best way to ride the ocean in OBX due to strong current and inconsistent sandbar surf breaks. On a windy day, I’ll typically cover around 30 miles of distance across 3-5 downwind kitesurfing runs. I am a regular-foot rider (left foot forward) and the side-shore wind from the right in Frisco produces excellent frontside riding. Downwinders allow you to practice the same turns over and over again without having to grind back upwind. All of this practice on frontside turns and looping the kite has paid dividends for me when visiting more challenging locations with a similar setup, such as Shacks Beach, Puerto Rico.
